Common Signs That You Need Hot Water System Repairs

Hot water systems are expected to last about a decade, but they don’t often just stop working completely. You’ll start to notice a range of symptoms that usually indicate your unit is in need of repairs. To avoid waking up without hot water, you should watch out for these potential issues with your home’s hot water system.

    Inconsistent Water Temperature

The most obvious sign that your hot water system has a problem is an inconsistent water temperature. It might take longer to heat up, never get as hot as it used to or simply run out much quicker than expected.

This can be as simple as repairing a faulty heating element or burst pipe, but you should have it checked out by a professional hot water plumbing service before it becomes a more expensive issue.

    Strange Noises

Hot water systems are designed to be relatively quiet so you should take note of any strange noises. Typical sounds that come from a failing hot water system include popping, banging or an echo.

These sounds generally indicate that sediment has built up within the system. Water can be trapped under a layer of sediment which then heats and bubbles as it attempts to escape. Your tank will take longer to heat the water which will increase your utility bills.

    Leaks and Corrosion

The first sign of a water leak might be mould or damp patches near the system or corrosion around the pipe fittings. This can often be repaired, but if water is leaking from the tank (and not the connections) then you need to replace your hot water system as soon as possible.

Metal expands when it is heated so the leak is likely to increase if not dealt with properly. A leaking pressure relief valve often indicates that the water heater can no longer handle the pressure and heat in the storage tank. If you have an electric system, water leaks can also cause serious harm from electric shocks.

    Brown/Rust-Coloured Water

If your cold water is clear, but your hot water is a murky or rusty colour then the problem is either your system or your hot water pipes. To determine which is failing, run your hot water for a while. If the liquid clears then the problem is most likely your pipes.

If not, it is a good sign that your hot water system is failing and should be replaced soon. The cause of the brown, rusty water is due to corrosion and if ignored you could end up with a damaging leak.

    Sulphuric (Rotten Egg) Smell

If your home is fitted with an LPG or natural gas hot water system, you should be wary of a distinct sulphur smell coming from your hot water heater. Sulphur is described as smelling like rotten eggs and is often the first sign of a highly dangerous gas leak.

Gas leaks are flammable and put your home at risk of fires and explosions. Immediately contact a hot water technician or gas fitter if you notice a possible gas leak coming from your hot water system.
